Assistant Director

Location: Albany County Public Library, Laramie, Wyoming

Are you wanting to move up in your career? Feeling ready for a rewarding position with more leadership opportunities, a bigger paycheck, and good benefits? You get excited about managing budgets and people? Perhaps you never envisioned yourself working in a library, but the Albany County Public Library is looking for someone with these skills and interests to become our first Assistant Director. We have a quiver full of book nerds, but we need a person who can help us manage library operations!

Under the direction of our new Library Director and former Youth Services Librarian, Ruth Troyanek, we look forward to growing our new Assistant Director into this position. This lucky person will work with our highly trained and motivated staff of 24 from our main branch in the center of Laramie. You could be part of our ACPL team, tackling financial and staffing projects that enable us to serve our community, whether we’re teaching pre-literacy skills to toddlers, helping someone apply for a job online, or offering free seeds and classes to helpa family start a garden.

The mission of ACPL is to enhance the quality of life in Albany County by offering access to a diverse collection of materials, being a key partner in education, and offering community-based programs through its professional and friendly staff. Although we have limited county funding, our services are greatly enhanced by volunteers and financial support from the Friends of ACPL and the ACPL Foundation.

What you’ll do:

  • Work alongside the Library Director, managerial staff and Board of Directors
  • Mastermind budget, human resources, and facilities maintenance
  • Foster community relationships
  • Support, motivate, and train staff

What we’re looking for:

  • Objectivity and conflict management skills
  • 3 – 5 years of administrative or managerial experience preferred
  • MBA or MPA preferred, other degrees considered
  • Finance, business, human resources, and management coursework

Youth Services Librarian

Location: Albany County Public Library, Laramie, Wyoming

Job Summary: Develops and implements youth services, meeting the reading and informational needs of patrons ages 0-18.  Coordinates all aspects of youth and young adult services, including programming, collection development, public relations, readers’ advisory, reference service, policy implementation, and training. Recruits, hires, trains and evaluates all staff supervised (Youth Services Specialist - 32 hrs/wk, Young Adult Specialist – 18 hrs/wk, Young Adult Assistant – 5 hrs/wk, and Stories @ the Parks seasonal summer employees). Trains and supervises department volunteers. Prepares and tracks budgets and statistics. Delegates as necessary. Consults with other managers and staff. Serves on the in-charge rotation and attends managers’ meetings. Liaison to daycares, preschools, schools and community groups.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Albany County Public Library is not accepting volunteers at this time. The Friends of the Library are accepting volunteers at this time. Information can be found under Book Sale Volunteer below.

Book Sale Volunteer

Assist the Friends of the Library by sorting through donations and learning to shelve and price books for sales.  Work with other volunteers on Tuesday mornings, or at other times during the week, to be arranged.  Contact the Friends of the Library at to learn more.

Book Shelver:  

If you have an hour or two per week, you can help us reshelve books and other materials returned by library patrons.  Get to know the collection inside and out!  Passage of shelving test, and regular hours are required for this position.  Time commitment:  1 – 10 hours per week; regular.

Centennial Branch Assistant:

This volunteer will provide reference and circulation services one day a week at the library branch in Centennial, WY.  Time commitment:  four hours per week.

Rock River Volunteer:  

Please contact Rock River Librarian, Shirley Spiegelberg, for opportunities.

Lost and Found:

This volunteer will go through our lost and found boxes once monthly and take useful items to the Salvation Army.  Time commitment:  three hours per month.

Scrapbook Volunteer (library staff scrapbook): 

This volunteer will compile and mount clippings and other items to go into the scrapbook recording library staff news.. Time commitment:  5 hours per month.

Tax Preparation Volunteer: 

Volunteers are needed between mid-January and April 15 to help people file their income tax returns.  No previous experience is necessary, and complete training is provided for this IRS sponsored program.  After training, volunteers help an average of 8 hours a month during the tax season.  For more details email or call Paul Heimer at 745-8643 or
