A current driver's license will suffice for both. If your license does not reflect your current address, a piece of mail or a bill you have received will verify your address.

Get Interlibrary Loan

Have you found an item in another Wyoming library that you would like to borrow?  Is there an item no Wyoming library has – but you’d like us to find it for you?  We can do that through our inter-library loan service.

To request an inter-library loan you have several options:

1.        Log into your account from our web page.  Your library card number is the barcode on your card (no letters or spaces, just numbers); for the password, try WYLD (unless you’ve changed your password - which we recommend!)

2.       If you find an item in another Wyoming library in our catalog just click on “Place Hold” and the system will treat the request as an inter-library loan request.  Just follow the prompts to place your request.

3.       Call the library to ask us to place the request for you:  307-721-2580 x2.

Find a Good Book to Read

There’s a good question! Our staff would be happy to help you find a book you’d like by asking you about other books you’ve enjoyed and what you’re looking for now. You can come in or call us at 721-2580 x5462.

We also have a database called NoveList available with your library card. To use it from home, you will need a username and password. Your username is the barcode number on your library card (no letters, no spaces) and your password is WYLD – but we recommend changing it right away to something you’ll remember.

An “Author Read-alikes” section lists current popular authors and recommends authors with similar styles or characters.

Other sections can help you find all the titles in your favorite author’s book series, “Describe a plot” to help you find a book you’ve heard about but don’t remember the author or title, and even articles on books and authors to give you reviews, biographies and what’s the latest on mysteries, romances, etc.

NoveList for Kids is available to help readers in K-8 find their next favorite book

Damaged Books

I paid for the damaged book, can I keep it? This is a frequent question. No. The book remains the property of the Albany County Public Library. Your fees are paying for a new item. You are not buying a damaged book. Damaged items remain the library's property to be disposed of in the same way as other items withdrawn from the collection.

A damaged book may include missing signatures, animals chews, mysterious or unpleasant smells such as kerosene or urine, unpleasant stains such as orange juice, cocoa, bath water.

What is too “badly damaged” to keep in the collection is subjective. The same book can be just fine to one person and repulsive to another. We have seen urine, juice, lipstick, crumbs, water, kerosene, wine, and blood on library materials, and tend to be more critical rather than more accepting. A book with pages falling out or stained with known liquid would be fine for an individual to keep at home. However, the library’s standard is different because we work with the public, a book drop, and with people with immune deficiencies.

Withdrawn Books

After the library board and county commissioner approval, they are sold during the Friends of the Library book annual book sale. The Friends offer items for a year before a volunteer takes books up to recycling at the University of Wyoming and strips the bindings from them. The pages are then recycled, and the binding thrown away—bindings are not recyclable

Badly damaged items are thrown away.

Repair Personal Books

The library can not repair your personal book. However, we do have books on conservation and restoration. We can suggest some companies that provide book repair supplies--some of these companies provide brochures or booklets on the topic. The public services staff may be able to advise you about caring for your items. Call 721-2580 x2 to talk to our staff.

Bar Code Placement

When the library automated circulation and cataloging functions we decided to put the barcode in a standard and consistent place on each book (or audiobook, DVD, etc.). This makes checking out books faster since circulation staff does not need to spend search for the barcode. Technical services staff try not to cover text on a book when it can be avoided. If you have any questions or suggestions about processing of library materials, please feel free to contact Susan Simpson, the county librarian, at 721-5565.
